GEORGE TOWN, Aug 21 – Controversial rapper and musician Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, has been arrested upon arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport today. This was confirmed by Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mior Farid Alatrash.

Mior was quoted as saying that the 33-year-old artist will be transferred to Penang to assist in the further investigations. Mior said Namewee was reportedly arrested at 3.30pm. He said Namewee is expected to be remanded at the George Town magistrate’s court tomorrow.

He said Namewee is wanted by cops after several Malay interest groups were lodged separate police reports on July 30 in George Town over four-minute Namewee’s music video titled “Oh My God”, which went viral last month, was allegedly insults Islam as well as other faiths.

The case is being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship with the intent of insulting a religion. Namewee, who is also a filmmaker, first shot to fame in 2007 with his controversial parody using elements of the national anthem.
