KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 – Transparency International Chairman Jose Ugaz said although Umno leaders maintain a donation RM2.6 billion to Datuk Seri Najib Razak, it was not a big thing when he slammed back by declaring it there all the elements of great corruption.
The international anti-corruption activists Ugaz said in his presentation at the International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) 16th in Kuala Lumpur yesterday that there are three features in great corruption which is he conducted highly placed individuals and authorities with involving a large sums of money and also having an impact on human rights.
Ugaz said the RM2.6 billion received by Najib in his personal bank account is a great example of corruption. He said that the money transfer can be equated with illicit funds flowing into major banks such as HSBC, owned by United Kingdom and BNP Paribas, France.
Previously, the activists claimed that HSBC channeling money earned from illegal logging in Sarawak, while BNP Paribas was fined US $ 9 billion in US courts (US) for moving billions of dollars to countries labeled as a sponsor of terrorism. Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) last month confirmed Najib received RM2.6 billion from a single source in an unnamed Middle East for unspecified purposes.
“If money is the aim to help the poor and it is not up to them, then it’s impact on human rights. He did not explain, for what and where the money comes from and what he should do when it receives the money. He also needs to prove that money does not come from illegal or illegitimate source,” said Ugaz said after the presentation yesterday.
“Political parties must not accept the illegal source of money. Meanwhile, I also would like to urged critics to accept his resignation because of the money and the money was donated to reject the explanation as against the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) as it moved in 2013, before Isis was founded,” he added.
