KANGAR, Dec 5 – Perlis state government is hoping that the federal government would consider reinstating free flow zone status to Wang Kelian to lure more tourists to the border town. State Tourism Committee chairman, Abdul Jamil Saad said it was learnt that, at present, the state government’s application on the matter was being scrutinised by the Home Ministry.
Speaking to reporters here, he said during its time as a town with a status of a flee flow zone, Wang Kelian was a major tourist attraction in Perlis, not only for local, but also foreign visitors, especially from Thailand. However, when the status was revoked over a year ago, Wang Kelian had become quite deserted.
Nevertheless, Abdul Jamil said the state government had not given up and would keep trying to re-enliven the town to draw tourists, including by applying for allocations to improve and upgrade the retail arcade in the area. At the moment, he said the state government was in the midst of selecting and making offers to business owners to move into the arcade.
