KUALA NERUS, Dec 18 – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has become the first university in Malaysia to adopt the ‘dual routing’ Internet protocol. UMT vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Nor Aieni Mukhtar said the application of the technology was based on a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to supply Internet Services at 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) that was signed with Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) Thursday.

“With the MoA and the technology they will be able to improve the reliability of the Internet in UMT where the percentage of interference is only 0.1 percent within the duration of the agreement for five years, which will starting this year,” she said here on Thursday.

UMT is also the second university on the East Coast to use the Internet 1Gbps and with the MoA, the university will be able to enjoy other amenities including receiving complimentary internet for free up to 500 Megabits per second (Mgbps) for 30 days every year,” she said estimating the cost of the upgrading to be about RM6.6 million.
