GEORGE TOWN, Jan 22 – Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng urged Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to respect the lunar new year celebration. He voiced his surprise how police have seem to overlook Jan 27 being the eve of Chinese New Year when they wanted to record his statement, something which had already been done on Jan 13.

“I feel that IGP should be more sensitive to Malaysian culture. I was shock when he told me that the police officer probably did not know Jan 27 is Chinese New Year eve. Every police officer knows that it is time to gear up to talk about traffic control. How can the police officer not know? I would say that is not a sensitive remark in the context of Malaysia,” Lim said.

“Even though Jan 27 is a working day but will anyone to hold meetings one day before Chinese New Year? No! You may not respect me as the Penang Chief Minister but I think you should respect the lunar new year celebration,” he told the reporters after giving out financial aid to needy students in his Bagan constituency.

A 13-year-old boy had lodged a police report against Lim at the IPD Ampang Jaya police station regarding the Shariah Bill issue. Subsequently, Lim had his statement recorded by a police team from IPD Ampang Jaya on Jan 13. The police is still considering taking his statement again on Jan 27.
