GEORGE TOWN, May 19 – A car ploughed into several hawker stalls at the famous roadside hawker centre along New Lane here this evening, injuring at least four people. Videos of the aftermath that have gone viral show a woman lying on the road with blood oozing from her head. Many other people are seen limping.
Police said in the 6.35pm incident, the driver, who was about to head for the main road, was believed to have accidentally switched to the reverse gear of her Hyundai i10 before crashing into the four food stalls and a table where four people were eating. Four patrons, who were eating at the stalls sustained minor injuries.
“We believe the woman crashed into the stalls in reverse. She was not there when our men arrived at the scene and we are searching for her. The case is being investigated under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving,” Northeast District police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar told reporters. — PN
