GEORGETOWN, May 19 – Penang governor Abdul Rahman Abbas today urged civil servants in the state to protect the good name of the service and fight corruption by reporting those who try to bribe them. In his speech during the opening of the fifth session of the 13th State Legislative Assembly, he called on all the state’s civil servants to follow in the footsteps of Prophet Solomon.

“I want to advise public servants to protect the good name of the civil service, be steadfast in rejecting corruption and be stern against abuse of power that can cause leakages of state revenue. In fact, I hope public servants can be more brave to report irresponsible people who try to bribe them in Penang,” he said.

Abdul Rahman also praised civil servants in Penang for being hardworking and contributing towards the development of the state. He also said that he fully supports the state government’s measures to combat corruption in the civil service by dealing strictly with those found guilty.

“I fully support firm action taken on those found guilty of corruption. This includes the stern action of removing and dismissing state public servants from their duties (and firing). I hope they will be brave enough to report on those trying to offer bribes to public servants in the state,” he said.

Earlier, Rahman inspected a 102-men police guard of honour mounted by the Royal Malaysia Police and officiated the first meeting of the fifth session of the 13th State Legislative Assembly today. The assembly was adjourned to Monday morning (May 22) and is expected to sit until Friday of the same week. — PN
