PETALING JAYA, Jul 31 – Malaysian burger joint myBurgerLab will introduce the Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang burger ahead of Merdeka Day. This comes after the release of the Nasi Lemak burger by McDonald’s in Singapore. The new burger sparked debate between Malaysians and Singaporeans on social media, and myBurgerLab has been called “copycats”.
In response, myBurgerLab has tweeted an image of the burger with the caption “Dear Singapore, nice try but …” According to an interview with the Singapore’s Channel News Asia, myBurgerLab has also been claimed that it had invented the nasi lemak burger first.
“(The Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang Burger) is for our National Day (on Aug 31) and also as a response to everyone who tagged us and requested for this burger to be made, because Malaysia’s McDonald’s didn’t have it.” The spokesperson told Channel News Asia said they actually had this recipe since three years ago, but they decided not to launch it because they felt it was a boring product.
“We thought: ‘Why would you eat a nasi lemak burger when you can have nasi lemak?’ Well, it seems times have changed and people want some form of fusion in their food nowadays,” myBurgerLab explains over its decision to launch the food fight challenge.
