KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 – Facebook has activated its Safety Check feature to let users in Penang inform their friends and family that they are safe after heavy rain and strong winds occur at Penang last night and today.

Titled “The Flooding in Penang, Malaysia”, the function enables those in the affected areas to mark themselves as safe from the floods on Facebook.

It listed eight areas in Penang as affected areas including George Town, Bayan Lepas, Batu Feringghi, Sungai Puyu, Sungai Pinang, Balik Pulau and Bukit Mertajam, all in Penang, as well as Kampung Masjid in Kedah.

“Use caution and avoid flooded areas. Updated sources report that at least five people have been killed and 2,000 have been evacuated.

“Affected neighbourhoods include Kampung Permatang Rawa, Kampung Benggali, Kampung Simpah, Kampung Ooi Leng Hooi, Kampung Padang Lalang, Tanjung Bungah, Jalan Perak.

“Dozens of houses in multiple villages were damaged, and a landslide has damaged a road in Tanjung Bungah. Military personnel have been deployed to assist with relief efforts,” said Facebook on its crisis response page.
