GEORGE TOWN, Jan 10 – The Penang police have increased security surveillance, especially in locations of public focus, jewellery shops and financial institutions to curb crime in conjunction with the coming festive seasons.
State crime prevention and community safety department chief, Datuk Mohamad Anil Shah Abdullah said the police were increasing patrols in the locations concerned to prevent crime such as robbery, theft and shop burglaries.
He said this was because Penang was expected to receive thousands of people and foreign tourists in conjunction with the Thaipusam celebration on Jan 31.
“Subsequently, in mid-February is the Chinese New Year celebration. So, it is certain that Penang will once again become a focus, and based on our monitoring, the people will throng locations such as jewellery shops and banks,” he told reporters here today. — Bernama
