KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 30 – The total value of the tourism industry rose 10.3% per annum to RM166 billion in 2015, compared to RM101.8 billion in 2010. It involves 510,874 establishments operating in 2015 with an annual growth rate of 6.4% from 375,457 establishments in 2010.
Based on a statement on a report of the 2016 Economic Census on tourism statistics main findings issued by the Statistics Department today, the number of workers in the industry concerned also grew by 4.4%, at 2.5 million in 2015 compared to 2 million in 2010.
“Salaries and wages rose 11.2% from RM29.7 billion in 2010 to RM50.7 billion in 2015, with 1.9 million hired workers and an average annual wage of RM26,438 and average monthly pay of RM2,203,” said the statement.
The department said e-commence activities of the tourism industry generated a revenue of RM147.3 billion while in terms of contribution, the retail trade (shopping) services recorded the highest percentage at RM68.7 billion, followed by air passenger travel (RM25.6 billion) as well as sports and recreation, at RM19.2 billion.
The census also showed that Selangor and Kuala Lumpur were among the major locations that contributed the highest value to the tourism industry, at RM50,977.9 million and RM50,480.7 million respectively, followed by Johor (RM11,406.3 million), Penang (RM9,012 million), Perak (RM6,708.7 million) and Sarawak (RM6,680.6 million). — Bernama
