PUTRAJAYA, 30 SEPTEMBER 2021 – The Department of Statistics, Malaysia today releases the Domestic Tourism Survey 2020 by state which is based on the survey conducted in 2020. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin, Chief Statistician Malaysia in his review said, “Overall, domestic tourism performance in Malaysia for 2020 declined significantly in visitor arrivals and total expenditure with -44.9 per cent and -60.8 per cent, respectively.
Performance for all states contracted in terms of volume and value due to the implementation of the COVID-19 lockdown. In 2020, Selangor’s domestic visitor expenditure receipt was RM7.1 billion, a decline of -52.8 per cent from the previous year. W.P. Kuala Lumpur recorded RM5.3 billion, decreased -57.8 per cent. Also registered a significant decline was Sarawak which fell -61.0 per cent to RM3.4 billion. Other states that recorded notable decline were Perak -61.5 per cent (RM3.3 billion) and Pahang -64.1 per cent (RM2.7 billion).”
In terms of domestic visitor arrivals, Selangor recorded 19.7 million visitors, dropped -41.3 per cent as against to previous year. Meanwhile, Perak and W.P. Kuala Lumpur fell -37.5 per cent and -45.1 per cent, respectively. Sabah and Kedah also recorded significant fall of -53.1 per cent and -31.8 per cent to register 10.3 million and 10.1 million domestic visitors in 2020. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin also highlighted, “Visiting relatives and friends was the highest main purpose of visit for all states except W.P. Putrajaya (Holiday/ leisure/ relaxation).
Based on the choice for type of accommodation, majority of tourists chose unpaid accommodation (relatives’ & friends’ houses) except for W.P. Putrajaya which majority of them (64.3%) preferred to stay in hotels. In addition, land transport was the most prevalent choice for mode of transport by tourists in every state except W.P. Labuan which was dominated by air transport (55.1%). Commenting further on the social & demographic profiles of domestic visitors, Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin explained that domestic visitors aged 25 to 39 years registered the highest arrivals for all states.
In terms of household income class of domestic visitors, the states of Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak received majority of domestic visitors earning RM1,001 to RM3,000 per month. Melaka and W.P. Putrajaya were the most popular states visited by domestic visitors from the households earning RM3,001 to RM5,000 per month. Meanwhile, five states (Johor, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, W.P. Kuala Lumpur and W.P. Labuan) registered the highest percentage of domestic visitors from households earning RM5,001 to RM10,000 per month.
