GEORGE TOWN, October 23 – In regards to a recent sexual assault and harassment on a female, taking place in a female restroom located in KOMTAR Penang on the 21st of October 2021. The suspect was apprehended by the KOMTAR security team and turned over to PDRM in accordance with KOMTAR security protocol. Upon further inquiry, the investigation department at IPD Timur Laut refused to register the complainant’s account of events due to lack of evidence and information. The suspect was released without comprehensive effort to further investigate and resolve the issue at hand.
Urban Life Volunteers of Penang has reported that these forms of sexual misconduct have been rampant within the KOMTAR zone. However, complaints filed by both workers and business owners tend to fall on deaf ears. With no further investigation or action taken by PDC Management, these misdemeanors toward women have increased over time, resulting in perpetrators acting boldly – knowing their wrongdoings will be disregarded.
We denounce such acts of violence toward women. We have zero tolerance policy for sexual harassment, abuse and assault, as well as any other unwelcome physical contact, violence or threats of physical violence. We also understand that these forms of violence do not have to be of sexual or physical in nature, and can include offensive verbal remarks about a person’s sex, gender or sexual orientation. Therefore, Parti MUDA Pulau Pinang strongly stand against all forms of harassment, abuse and violent conducts.
Parti MUDA Pulau Pinang’s Ms. Tan Sin Ying of Biro Permerkasaan Wanita & Hak Asasi strongly urge the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun to table the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill at its soonest. This will allow pertaining parties to act accordingly to address the alarming rise of sexual harassment cases in Malaysia. Any further delays on this bill – which was initially projected to be tabled in March 2021 – will significantly halt progressive steps carried out by all parties championing equality and women rights.
We will continue to work closely with all relevant parties to address instances of sexual harassment and any other forms of misconduct if and when they arise. We are open to assist in developing policies and solutions that discourage any such deeds, and regulations that urge equality and respect among all individuals – regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or socio-economic background.
