PENANG, October 25 –The Kedah Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) and the Baling District Office are urged to take immediate action to overcome the problem of river bank erosion that occurred in Kampung Rambung, Teluk Sanau here. The Penang Consumers Association (CAP) regrets that although the problem has been lingering for the past 15 years but until now no action has been taken to address it.
Commenting on the Utusan Malaysia newspaper report, 21 October 2021, on this matter, CAP is worried that if the situation is left unchecked, it will get worse and affect the surrounding area more seriously in the future. CAP believes that apart from the cemetery and six houses in the village that have been affected by this incident and are in an unsafe condition, it is possible that the agricultural land that generates income for the residents here will also be threatened.
According to the Chairman of the Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) Roslan Mohd Akhir, the residents involved have made a complaint about this problem to the relevant parties but no action has been taken. Therefore, CAP asked DID and Baling District Office to conduct a comprehensive investigation and study on the cause of the river bank erosion problem in the village.
Apart from disclosing the results of the investigation and study to the public, assistance should also be channeled if there is any property damage involving the villagers.
