GEORGE TOWN, November 23 – Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC) and SEGi Group of Colleges is inviting avid youth gamers to participate in the Youth Esports Challenge 2021 that is offering a total prize pool worth RM30,000. The objectives of the Esports competition are to educate students and the public on the current trend in Esports and to build a community for League of Legends and Valorant gamers.
In a press conference held on 15 November 2021, it was also revealed that Anemos, TTRacing and Illegear as the co-organisers of the competition, while Malaysia Airlines is the official airline partner. Other sponsors of the event are Yogood, Kantinlab, Celsius, and Ticket2u. The Youth Esports Challenge 2021 will be a 32-team competition for the games of League of Legends and Valorant, where each team consists of five members. Anyone from the ages of sixteen to thirty is eligible to enter the competition.

Preliminary rounds of the competition will commence on 1st December 2021, and the semi-finals and finals will be held on 18 and 19 December 2021 respectively. Their common ground in the speech was the fact that they are honoured to be a part of the competition and a part of the development of eSports in Penang. Gwee mentioned that ‘the development of esports has finally grown from just a casual gaming experience into one of the biggest industries in the world, comparable to any major industries.’ On another hand, Lau expressed that the public still has a negative perception on eSports, and they still regard eSports as an unhealthy habit and a waste of time.
However, in reality eSports has more positive to it as compared to the negative. Esports helps to develop soft skills of youngsters as well as improving their thinking skills.
