GEORGE TOWN, December 3 – YB Soon Lip Chee, Penang Youth and Sports EXCO welcomed the gazetting and implementation of the Vote18 policy and automatic voter registration from 15 December 2021. He called on the youths to fulfill their responsibilities as voters following the lowering of the voting age to 18 years, and also to increase their knowledge of political literacy to prepare themselves before the 15th General Election.
YB Soon said that the Penang State Government is always sensitive and very concerned to provide continuous awareness to the youth on the right to vote 18. He said the programs that had been implemented by the Penang State Government included the Youth Conference, the Young Democrats Workshop, the Age 18 Become a Candidate Campaign, and the Penang 18 edition of Candidates.
“The Penang State Government through the Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC) has collaborated with NGOs to organize various programs that can raise awareness to the youth. “There are several awareness and education programs being planned by the PYDC and will be organized next year together with the MPKK youth bureau in each kadun.”
“Besides that, PYDC has also collaborated with the Election Commission (EC) to implement the Vote-18 Campaign Program to provide more exposure to youths on the implementation of the VOTE 18 Campaign, voting rights, amendment of voter age and age of Dewan Rakyat Members and Members. Assemblymen.”
He said that through these programs, the Penang State Government was confident that the youths in Penang would better understand the responsibilities and roles they had to play as new voters. The youths were also given the opportunity to submit opinions and suggestions related to the government’s policy that allows the age limit to be eligible to vote at 18 years old.
“In addition, after the Undi18 policy was gazetted, now PYDC has contacted the EC to collaborate on Election Academics to hold education and awareness programs targeted at youths in IPTA/IPTS. This initiative is being planned and discussed with the EC. ”
