BAYAN LEPAS, January 13 – Part of Malaysia Highest Elevated Highway Jalan Berkembar Jalan Paya Terubong (Bukit Kukus) is now open to traffic as part of the Opening Ceremony of the Jalan Paya Terubong Twin Road Construction Project (Bukit Kukus ) This morning. Due to the rapid development in the state of Penang, we need infrastructure that can balance the carrying capacity of the present and the future.
The increasing number of vehicles every year has burdened the traffic in Penang. Therefore, infrastructure that can reduce traffic congestion is very much needed. We understand this need and the Penang City Council (MBPP) has become one of “the rare local authorities” that take the initiative to help the State and Federal Governments to
upgrade and build roads using MBPP’s own allocation.
Many projects that benefit the people have been implemented by MBPP in the past, but the Jalan Paya Terubong (Bukit Kukus) Twin Road Construction Project is the largest project ever implemented in the history of MBPP with the aim of alleviating traffic conditions in high density areas. especially in the Paya Terubong and Air Itam areas.
Jalan Berkembar Jalan Paya Terubong (Bukit Kukus) with a total distance of 3.825km is an alternative road for residents in the Paya Terubong and Air Itam areas to connect to the Bukit Jambul, Bukit Gambir, Balik Pulau and surrounding areas. This project which cost a total cost of RM378.2 million is believed to be able to relieve traffic conditions, especially Jalan Paya Terubong and Thean Tek Highway/Jalan Bukit Kukus which often experience congestion during peak hours.
In planning this project, MBPP did not neglect the residents in the Balik Pulau area. Tun Sardon Link which is a flyover connecting Jalan Paya Terubong Twin Road to Jalan Tun Sardon with a distance of 825 meters can benefit Balik Pulau residents in particular and other road users in general who want to go to Paya Terubong, Bukit Jambul, Bukit Gambir and so on.
Apart from that, MBPP also provides bicycle lanes along the Jalan Paya Terubong Twin Road flyover to give cycling enthusiasts the opportunity to carry out this activity at the highest flyover in Malaysia at this time where the height from ground level to road surface from Jalan Berkembar Jalan Paya Terubong to Tun Sardon Link is 61.5 meters high.
For off-road cycling enthusiasts, cyclists can use the lanes provided at the bottom of the viaduct. MBPP also plans to build a recreational area in this area to provide facilities for the public to have fun.
I hope that the opening of Jalan Paya Terubong Twin Road (Bukit Kukus) can help in easing the traffic burden and reduce traffic congestion for the surrounding areas and benefit all road users. MBPP will also always work with the State Government to address traffic problems on an ongoing basis for the welfare of the people of Penang.
