GEORGE TOWN, January 27 – On January 26, 2022, there were several videos on the social networking site Facebook about a fight incident involving a group of individuals in a road accident.
A review found that the video was recorded by the public on 26 January 2022 at approximately 2 pm in a road accident involving a lorry carrying a load of mosaics and two (2) other vehicles on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway, George Town, Penang. heading to the city center.
As a result of the investigation, the fight involved a group of individuals (approximately 20 people) consisting of car tow workers due to a misunderstanding regarding the matter of towing vehicles involved in the road accident.
The Traffic Police from the North East District Police Headquarters (IPD) who were at the scene tried to resolve the fight but failed and subsequently sought assistance from the Police Patrol Car Branch (MPV) and the Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) of the North East IPD. When MPV and URB members arrived at the scene, all the individuals had fled.
So far, a total of 5 local male individuals (aged between 26 and 50 years) have been arrested around George Town. The police also confiscated the weapons used in the fight, namely a helmet and a ‘motorcycle fork lock’.
The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code (offense of rioting with a weapon). A remand application for all the arrested suspects will be made on January 27, 2022 at the George Town Magistrate’s Court in Penang. Further investigations will continue including locating other suspects who are still at large.
