KUALA LUMPUR, February 5 – To celebrate the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the City of Kuala Lumpur. I congratulate the Ministry of Federal Territories (KWP) led by Yang Berhormat Dato ‘Seri Dr. Shahidan bin Kassim on the organization of this very meaningful event.
On February 1, Kuala Lumpur turned 50 and was declared the first city in Malaysia. In this mature age, of course, Kuala Lumpur as the capital of Malaysia has evolved with the changes of time. If in the early era of its growth, the environment of Kuala Lumpur was filled with nipah roof houses, now it is lively with skyscrapers as well as the rapid development of population.
The world continues to know Kuala Lumpur through great landmarks such as the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers which have made history as the tallest building in the world. The same goes for the Kuala Lumpur Tower which is the seventh tallest single tower in the world.
Now, Kuala Lumpur has a new landmark, Menara Merdeka 118 which is the second tallest tower in the world after Burj Khalifa and the tallest in Southeast Asia at a height of 678.9 meters. Recalling the history of this cosmopolitan capital, Kuala Lumpur located at Kuala Sungai Gombak and Sungai Klang began in 1857. Kuala Lumpur later grew from a small and secluded tin mining town to a well -known city.
The rapid economic growth in the mining area which has become a source of livelihood has attracted the interest of the surrounding community to migrate here. Clearly evident, the migration of the population inhabiting this city continues to increase year after year. Kuala Lumpur is experiencing rapid growth in its development. The prosperity of natural resources and economic activity helped attract more people to live in it which is now estimated at 8 million people.
In these 50 years, Kuala Lumpur must be better prepared to face challenges and look to the needs of the future. As the local authority that governs Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) needs to be dynamic and productive in managing municipal issues as well as strengthening service delivery.
Malaysian families practice the principle of “no one is left out”, such as standing equally high, sitting equally low, measuring equally level, weighing equally. This principle applies in managing and administering the city of Kuala Lumpur. The B40 group, for example, needs to be taken into account to ensure that their basic needs are protected.
The economy is the main driver of the city. The real attraction to the city is its ability to create jobs. The formation of a sustainable city must take into account the economic needs of a city so that it truly creates a sustainable city for all. With this attraction factor, the city can continue to grow holistically for the long term.
The existence of new media brings city dwellers closer to city administrators. City residents’ expectations of DBKL are high. Therefore, the involvement of city dwellers in developing Kuala Lumpur is important. This is to ensure that their voices are heard and taken into account in all matters. City dwellers are the backbone of Kuala Lumpur’s integrity. It is their voices and views that will drive the government’s efforts.
In particular, on the objectives and focus in the administration of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur today. This is in line with my commitment as Prime Minister. In addressing the issue of global climate change, I fully support Kuala Lumpur’s initiative to help the government achieve its carbon neutral nation target. This is because Malaysia is targeted to become a carbon neutral country as early as 2050.
To achieve this, Kuala Lumpur needs to move forward in tandem with other major cities to achieve global goals in addressing climate change issues. In conjunction with the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the city of Kuala Lumpur, I would like to announce the Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Family Wellness Package (PKKMKL).
First, in improving the quality of life of the people, CHKL is and will implement the following:
i. To ensure a healthy life, DBKL provides pedestrian walkways, bicycle paths and green networks with priority given to the comfort and safety of users.
ii. To mobilize economic activities, CHKL upgrades hawker stalls in obsolete hawker centers, including clusters of licensed roadside stalls.
iii. In addition, DBKL is now in the process of making Kuala Lumpur a city of zero hardcore poor.
iv. To enable city dwellers to have a more comfortable life:
- CHKL will build 5,000 ‘council homes’ for rent to city dwellers with a minimum area of 750 square feet.
- CHKL will also repair elevators involving 306 elevators at 31 locations of the People’s Housing Project/Public Housing (PPR/PA) and will be implemented within two years.
v. To ensure the safety of city dwellers, the level of security in Kuala Lumpur is enhanced by conducting monitoring through closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras controlled by the Kuala Lumpur Command & Control Center.
Second, improve fast online service delivery for the following matters:
i. Approval of business premises license within 24 hours.
ii. Construction permit application for small -scale development and application results can be obtained within three days.
As an incentive to encourage city dwellers to do business online, payments involving all application fees, will be given a 10% rebate throughout 2022.

On this occasion too, I would like to wish you a Happy 50th Anniversary of the City of Kuala Lumpur. Hopefully Kuala Lumpur as the capital of Malaysia will continue to remain prosperous and prosperous.
