PUTRAJAYA, February 10 – Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato Sri Ismail Sabri today chaired the National Affordable Housing Council (MPMMN) Meeting by teleconference which was also attended by the Chief Ministers and Chief Ministers, Cabinet Ministers, Tan Sri Chief Secretary to the Government and the Governor of Bank Negara.
Also present were representatives of housing provider agencies comprising Federal Government Agencies, State Governments and Statutory Bodies as well as representatives of private housing developers.
MPMMN is a platform to discuss and coordinate the direction of planning, coordination and monitoring for the provision of affordable housing (RMM) throughout the country in line with the goal of ONE FAMILY ONE HOUSE.
Today’s meeting agreed to set a new direction for the People’s Housing Program (PPR) which takes into account current needs as well as incorporating new components towards achieving the Liveable Malaysia agenda.
The construction of the new PPR will take into account elements such as connectivity and internet access such as fiber to the home (FTTH), public transport connectivity as well as a more economical and comfortable design.

The implementation of 500,000 affordable housing units nationwide during the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) involves the Federal Government, State Governments and private housing developers.
The Government is committed to ensuring the provision of adequate, quality and affordable housing to meet the needs of the growing population. Therefore, KPKT has introduced the Home Ownership Program (HOPE) to look at a more comprehensive ecosystem in the provision of housing, housing financing and programs that can help Malaysian families in housing ownership.
The meeting wanted Bank Negara to review the housing financing model to facilitate housing ownership. This is to ensure that financial institutions facilitate loans for B40 and M40 to buy PPR houses and affordable houses. Focus is given to direct purchase and rent to own.
All parties need to play a role so that the target of ONE FAMILY ONE HOUSE can be realized. To achieve this goal, the Federal Government will provide subsidies, the state government will provide land while banks will facilitate financing to ensure that PPR houses and affordable houses can be sold at affordable prices.
At the same time, the government is committed to providing affordable housing for the younger generation so that they can own their own homes.
The meeting also focused on the construction of affordable housing in small towns and suburbs to increase the opportunities for the M40 to buy a house.
The focus of the meeting was the rising cost of building materials such as iron and steel as well as cartel dominance in the construction industry. Therefore, the Minister of Housing and Local Government and the Real Estate and Housing Developers Association of Malaysia (REHDA) are instructed to address this matter. If it stems from an import permit (AP), the meeting recommends that it be open to all.
The MPN also heard presentations by Khazanah Research Institute and Bank Negara on current data as well as issues arising in the aspect of people’s housing and access to financing for affordable housing.
This information will be used as a basis for the government to improve the strategy of providing affordable housing as well as the strengthening of related policies.
