PENANG, March 1 – The Penang Consumers Association (CAP) in a survey conducted found that Pasir Panjang Beach, in Balik Pulau, Penang is currently experiencing serious damage due to storm surges.
The incident that happened a year ago has caused a 300 -meter -long cliff in the area to collapse.
Several coconut and rhubarb trees have been destroyed and more than 20 trees are waiting to fall. Apart from that, the Wawasan Negara Camp near the beach is exposed to very dangerous conditions because the effects of erosion have almost affected some buildings in the area.
While the stairs for visitors to the beach have also been damaged and there is a lot of stone waste scattered along the beach. CAP is upset and worried that although this problem has been going on for a long time, until now no action has been taken by the authorities to address it.
CAP believes that if the situation is left unchecked, the environment in this area will be further threatened and untoward incidents may occur and affect public safety.
Therefore, CAP urges the Penang government, Local Authorities (PBT), Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) and the National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM) to conduct an investigation and take immediate action to address the root cause of this problem.
CAP requests that the relevant parties disclose the results of the investigation and the action taken to the public as soon as possible.
