KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 – Umno Special General Assembly today unanimously approved a motion to amend its Constitution which, among others, allows party elections to be held no more than six months after the general election.Secretary-General Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan confirmed the matter via his Twitter page.
The amendment was approved unanimously by the delegates in Dewan Merdeka WTC KL on 15/5/2022. Alhamdulillah,” he said.The motion which involves Clause 10.16, 15.3 and 18.2 was proposed by Vice President Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled in front of 2,586 delegates.Umno previously postponed party elections for 18 months after the 2018/2021 term ended on June 30 last year.
By far right, it should be held before December 30, 2022. It was seconded by Prime Minister who is also Vice-President Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.Apart from the meeting, Umno also celebrates its 76th anniversary and holding an Eid open house, where about 8,000 people attended.
Party Pesident Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the amendment to the party’s constitution is significant for stability and the dignity of Umno in preparing heirs in the future.It also prepares and strengthen the party in run-up to the 15th general election, expected to be held sometimes this year.
“What is the meaning of the stability agenda that we offer to the people if our own party is not at peace. The party is divided, there are factions and groups that ultimately harm us all. “Remember, we won’t let Umno in a mess. Also bear in mind that we do not want to see the party split as it will only land us in a rickety,” he said when delivering a speech at the party’s extraordinary meeting here, today.
