HAWANA 2022 – Melaka Declaration, Guidelines For Journalism And National Media Industry

MELAKA, May 29 – Prime Minister YAB Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob is scheduled to join more than 700 media practitioners on May 29. He has deliver the opening speech of the HAWANA Summit at Hotel Hatten, Melaka at 2.30 pm todat. The biggest celebration specifically for media practitioners will also see the presence of journalists from several ASEAN countries.

Among the things that will be the focus of this year’s celebration themed ‘Suara Jelata, Aspirasi Negara’ is the Melaka Declaration which outlines the direction of journalism and the country’s media industry. The ceremony this time will also see honors given to professional journalists/ individuals/ organizations through the HAWANA Award 2022.

Selection is made for recipients who have made significant contributions not only in the field of journalism but also in shaping the minds of the people through the works produced. In the morning, a National Media Forum will be held as a platform for editors-in-chief, authors and media figures to discuss the future importance of the media industry, especially when faced with technological changes and an increasingly challenging environment.

Minister of Communications and Multimedia YB Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima TPr Annuar bin Haji Musa will deliver the closing speech at the forum. On 28 May, media practitioners were celebrated in a dinner with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka, His Excellency Tun Seri Setia (Dr.) Haji Mohd Ali bin Mohd Rustam, organized by the Melaka State Government.

HAWANA which is celebrated every year on May 29 is the government’s recognition and appreciation for the contribution of media practitioners in helping to develop the country and strengthen community unity.

For the progress of the country, the interest of the people, the welfare of society and public order, journalists and media practitioners have a role to play in conveying government policies and programs, disseminating information and news with integrity. The media can also be an ambassador for the concept of the Malaysian Family to shape a better life after the COVID-19 pandemic.

HAWANA 2022 is organized by the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (K-KOMM) and implemented by the Malaysian National News Agency (BERNAMA) with the involvement of media organizations and the cooperation of the Melaka State Government.

The HAWANA celebration was held for the first time in Malaysia on 11 April 2018 at the MATRADE Exhibition and Convention Center Kuala Lumpur. Several other countries such as China and Indonesia have long celebrated Journalists’ Day and the country gives official recognition to the services and struggles of journalists every year.
