GEORGE TOWN, June 29 – The Penang State Museum situated in the heart of George Town’s heritage enclave sees major facelift as restoration project enters its final phase. Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Yeoh Soon Hin said that the newly restored museum in Lebuh Farquhar will house an array of artefacts and heritage valuables, all of which will provide a window for visitors to glimpse into Penang’s vibrant past and multicultural social fabric.
What we essentially want to do achieve through this restoration project, is to leverage on our heritage assets and endowments to cultivate a healthy and robust creative ecosystem. The restoration is more than just hardware enhancement and facelift on the facade. We are also placing our emphasis on the curation of content to promote museum education and outreach in Penang,” he said after inspecting the Museum’s restoration progress at Lebuh Farquhar.
While commenting about the future of Penang’s museums and art galleries, Yeoh said the Penang State Government through his office is identifying more locations to be used as creative spaces. We will continue to learn from foreign success stories such as London and Vienna where creative spaces are abundant and sprawling in every corner.
Although we still have a long way to go in Penang’s creative agenda, we will do our best to establish creative spaces in all 5 different districts of the state, he added. Earlier this month, Yeoh also announced the usage of former government quarters in Sepoy Line as an extension to the Penang State Art Gallery upon completion of restoration.
