GEORGE TOWN, July 17 – On July 17, 2022 at approximately 4.30am, the North East District Police Headquarters (IPD) Operations Room received public information on a road accident involving a motorcyclist on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway. Preliminary investigation found that the accident occurred on this early morning at about 4am on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway heading to the City Center involving several motorcycles suspected of being involved in illegal racing activities.
While at the scene it is believed several motorcyclists have lost control and crashed into each other. In the incident, two Perodua Myvi and Proton Waja vehicles were also hit from behind by the group of motorcyclists. So far seven victims have been identified as involved in the accident. Four people were confirmed dead, namely three victims died at the scene while one died at the Penang Hospital. Apart from that, three victims are still receiving treatment at the Penang Hospital where one victim is still in the red zone and the other two victims are in the yellow zone.
The dead victims were between 17 and 25 years old while the injured victims were between 19 and 34 years old. All the victims involved in the accident are from Penang and Kedah. Earlier before the incident, the PDRM from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department of the Penang Contingent Police Headquarters and the traffic team from the North East IPD Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division had made an initial patrol to prevent illegal racing activities.
Plans to arrest individuals involved in the illegal race have also been arranged. Indeed, the plan of Allah SWT precedes all plans. The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The PDRM advised the public not to get involved in illegal racing activities. This is because it can not only endanger their own lives but also the safety of other road users. Parents are also urged to constantly monitor their children’s activities so as not to engage in any illegal and harmful activities.
