KUCHING, August 16 – The United Sarawak Party (PSB) lost one seat after Batu Lintang State Assembly Member See Chee How announced to become an Independent representative, said Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar. Mohamad Asfia said Chee How had sent him a letter last Friday (August 12), which informed him that he had resigned as a PSB member with immediate effect without giving any reason. He said, Chee How’s decision left PSB with three seats, while DAP remained with two, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (76 seats) and Bebas (one seat).
In the letter, he (Chee How) did not explain the reason for resigning from the party. We accept (his decision) and we will reorganize the opposition (in the state assembly).He did not jump (party) from PSB to another party but he only resigned (in PSB and moved) as (representative) Bebas,” he said at a press conference at the DUN building, today. Mohamad Asfia said, through the letter, the Batu Lintang assemblyman informed that he will continue to serve the residents of his area and all the people of Sarawak despite moving as an independent representative.
Describing the representative as likable, wise and efficient, Mohamad Asfia is confident that Chee How, who is also a member of the Consultative Committee in advising the House regarding the Malaysia Agreement 1963, can continue to carry out his responsibilities as an assemblyman well. In the meantime, Mohamad Asfia said, the third state assembly meeting is expected to take place this November.
In the last Sarawak State Election, Chee How defended the N11 Batu Lintang seat after obtaining 4,420 votes defeating the GPS candidate, Sih Hua Tong who obtained 4,327 votes, Cherishe Ng (PKR) 1,823 votes, Voon Lee Shan Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) 1,570 votes and Alex Leong Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspiration) 187 votes.– BERNAMA
