GEORGE TOWN, October 6 – The Penang Economic Summit 2022 will discuss and address Penang’s path for the next decade. The Summit, to be held on 20 and 21 October at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre, is jointly organised by Enterprise Asia and Penang Institute. At a press conference today to announce the Summit, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the State look forward to welcoming the estimated 300 local and international business leaders, entrepreneurs and policy-makers to Penang for the Summit.
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Penang’s industrialisation this year, we are determined to work closely with the industry and the civil society to propel Penang into a high-income economy, underscored by innovation, digitalization and high quality of life for Penangites and visitors alike”, Chow said. Datuk William Ng, vice chairman of Enterprise Asia and the Summit’s organising chairman said that the Penang Economic Summit 2022 is held concurrently with the Asia Economic Forum.
A signature event of the association, that was last held in Shanghai prior to the pandemic, and virtually for the past two years. Dato’ Dr. Ooi Kee Beng, executive director of Penang Institute, calls for global collaborations and building trust among the nations: “We cannot recover alone, we have to recover together, within national borders and beyond national borders, and we cannot recover if we do not take full advantage of the latest technologies to provide us with sustainability and efficiency.
These are the thoughts behind how the panels are named, and who the speakers at the conference will be. The Penang Economic Summit 2022 will address critical challenges to economic growth in Asia. As the Russia-Ukraine conflict escalates, along with political conflicts, trade tensions and strained supply chains – a ‘perfect storm’ is threatening to halt the region’s economic recovery post-pandemic. The Summit’s speakers and panelists will discuss opportunities and new growth drivers for businesses in Asia, while exploring options for continue growth for Penang into the 2030s and beyond.
Speakers at the summit include the Chief Minister, who will deliver the opening address, Dato’ Haji Abdul Halim bin Haji Hussain, state EXCO for trade, industry and entrepreneurship development; Zairil Khir Johari, state EXCO for infrastructure and transport; Dr. Allinnettes Adigue of the Global Reporting Initiative; Professor Danny Quah, dean and Li Ka Shing Professor in Economics, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore; Dato’ Seri Lee Kah Choon, special investment advisor to the Chief Minister, Dato’ Loo Lee Lian, CEO, Invest Penang; Tony Yeoh, CEO, Digital Penang; and many others.
