KUALA LUMPUR, October 7 – Government will provide 100% internet coverage in populated areas and provide fiber optic coverage to 9 million premises nationwide by 2025 under the National Digital Interconnection Project (JENDELA) Phase 2. This initiative involves a total investment of 8 billion ringgit including contributions from the industry. For the year 2023, the JENDELA initiative will provide 700 million ringgit to implement digital connectivity in 47 industrial areas and nearly 3,700 schools.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad will also pioneer the implementation of the Rural Internet Project by optimizing the electrical cable network to provide high-speed broadband facilities. This project will benefit over 60 thousand rural residents and is supported through a matching grant of 25 million ringgit. TNB Broadband Internet which will be offered via Allo, the internet service provider that owned by TNB. Allo currently only present in several rural areas already, providing fibre network in areas such as Sungai Rapat, Menglembu and Tasek in Perak, as well as Jasin, Melaka.
Allo had also announced plans earlier this year to continue expanding their broadband coverage to over 300,000 premises in Peninsular Malaysia by the end of the year. For 2023, Digital NasionalBerhad (DNB) will expand the 5G network throughout the country to cover 70 percent of highly populated areas. DNB plans to implement infrastructure expenditure worth 1.3 billion ringgit in 2023. Malaysian families will also enjoy faster internet speeds and cheaper 5G internet access.
Digi and Celcom is getting a 12.5% stake each in DNB while for TM and also YES with 20% of stake each with government holds the remaining 35% through the Ministry of Finance. For now, only YES offers their 5G network services to end users. DNB itself has now covered 33% of the populated area in Malaysia, and is expected to reach 40% by the end of 2022. Having completed the signing of the DNB share purchase agreement, now Digital Nasional Berhad has also announced that the telecommunications company will start introducing 5G services to users from October 2022.
