GEORGE TOWN, October 9 – Six Trishaw Drivers receive the Trishaw Maintenance assistance through Ascott Gurney Penang Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program to help trishaw drivers generate income and revivie Penang Cultural Heritage witness by Chairman of the State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee, Yeoh Soon Hin and the General Manager of Ascott Gurney Penang, Sharon Ang.
Sharon said, the assistance provided is to maintain the trishaws to to about 200 active trishaws drivers which will be implement in stages. Average trishaw driver is now able to earn around RM100 to RM200 and can be increase during weekends and school holidays. During the weekend Trishaw Driver can take four or five trips of tourist in a day. During the Covid-19 pandemic, trishaw driver in the city center of Penang here, Roshdi Abdul Rahman, 58, had to work part-time as a security guard to make ends meet.
However, now Roshdi can breathe a sigh of relief when he can return to riding a rickshaw with an income of around RM100 to RM200 a day after the tourism sector has recovered in this state. Roshdi, who is a father of two children in his 20s, said that he was unable to ride a rickshaw during the pandemic because the lack of tourists.
