KUALA LUMPUR, October 28 – The High Court today ordered the Muar parliamentary seat holder, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, to defend himself on four charges, including breach of trust amounting to RM1 million. Judicial Commissioner, Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid made the decision after the prosecution successfully proved a prima facie case against the President of the Malaysian Democratic Alliance (MUDA).
The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutors, Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin and Mohd ‘Afif Ali, while lawyers, Gobind Singh Deo and Haijan Omar, represented Syed Saddiq. On September 27, the prosecution closed the case after 30 witnesses finished testifying in the trial that started on June 21. The witnesses involved include Syed Saddiq’s mother and father, namely Shariffah Mahani Syed Abdul Aziz and Syed Abdul Rahman Abdullah Asagoff and the former Assistant Treasurer of ARMADA BERSATU, Rafiq Hakim Razali.
Also testifying were three investigating officers from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Mohd Syahmeizy Sulong, Nurul Hidayah Kamarudin and Asbi Munip. The prosecution also offered 13 witnesses to the defence, including two MACC forensic officers, Moses anak Lawrence and Wan Zulkifli Wan Jusoh and Syed Saddiq’s friends, namely Mohamed Amshar Aziz, Nurali Nadzwan and Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya.
Syed Saddiq, 29, who is also the former head of Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (ARMADA) is facing four charges, which are alleged to have conspired with Rafiq who was entrusted with funds amounting to RM1 million and committed breach of trust by misusing the funds.
