BATU KAWAN, November 5 – Shortly after being cleared of Covid-19, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow showed up in person at the Seberang Perai Vocational College nomination centre here today to submit his nomination papers for the Batu Kawan parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15).
Batu Kawan MCA chief Datuk Tan Lee Huat from Barisan Nasional (BN), former Bukit Tengah assemblyman Ong Chin Wen from Parti Warisan Sabah (WARISAN), Wong Chia Zhen from Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Lee Ah Leong from Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) was also showed up today caused Batu Kawan parliamentary seat set for five-cornered fight in GE15.
Chow, who is the Penang DAP chairman, has since recovered after being tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday.
“I tested positive on Tuesday, but I had some medication and recovered the next day with negative Covid-19 self-test results,” he told reporters after the conclusion of the nomination process at the Seberang Perai Vocational College.
DAP had announced that Chow, a former Member of Parliament for Tanjong, as the Pakatan Harapan candidate for Batu Kawan, replacing incumbent MP Kasthuriraani Patto, who had announced that she will not contest in the GE15. In the GE14, Kasthuriraani won the seat with a majority of 33,553 votes.
The Election Commission (EC) has set Nov 15 for early voting and Nov 19 for polling. The campaign period will be for 14 days beginning from the announcement of the candidates by the returning officers in the respective constituencies until 11.59 pm on Nov 18.
GE15 is held following the dissolution of the 14th Parliament by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob last Oct 10 with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
