GEORGE TOWN, January 11 – Since the beginning of 2023, all corners of the Penang area are facing the issue of widespread garbage piles, among these is the Air Itam Wastewater Treatment Plant. In relation to the matter, the Penang City Council (MBPP) claimed it was caused by the conversion of an unfamiliar “Garbage Disposal Contractor” to waste collection in residential areas. However, this issue is likely to occur due to other factors that result in the issue of garbage piles being allowed to drag on.

Therefore, the Penang City Council (MBPP) has taken immediate action by sending more manpower for the cleaning process, but the issue of garbage piles is still plagued. The problem of piles of rubbish has affected the daily lives of the common people of Penang State, and brought down the image of Penang as the Pearl Island. As a representative of the people, I request the MBPP to solve this problem immediately and that the contractor is still new is not a reason that can be accepted in general

Appoint a waste disposal contractor not only prioritizing the price, but also the contractor’s ability to execute. The problem of piles of rubbish has been happening for no less than 2 weeks and has had a serious and severe impact on the people. The concerned party must provide an explanation that can be justified and provide a solution immediately. I went to the field to visit some of the affected areas in Air Itam this morning with MBPP Secretary Dato IR Rajendran A/L P. Anthony, Councilor Tan Soo Siang, Councilor Mr. Rohaizat bin Hamid,

Councilor Mr. Lee Wei Seang, and Councilor Mr. Harvindar Singh. Here I would like to say a thousand thanks for the help and coordination of the Councilors and MBPP workers 24 hours in a row so that the problem of piles of junk does not deteriorate as a result of incompetent contractors. Now MBPP has terminated the contract with the garbage disposal contractor and I hope that the concerned party can learn from the mistakes and experience, and further appoint a new and more capable garbage disposal contractor and apologize to the people and communities affected.
