KUALA LUMPUR, January 20 – The Green Electricity Tariff (GET) programme which was introduced in 2022 will be continued for the year 2023 with an increase quota of up to 6,600GWh at the current premium tariff rate of 3.7 sen/kWh. The GET is a strategic initiative by the government to provide green electricity generated from renewable sources to customers of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) who intend to reduce their carbon footprint. The GET programme enables consumer with ESG commitments to reduce their greenhouse gas emission through the subscription of electricity generated from renewables.
A total of 1,994 consumers from the domestic, commercial and industry category are subscribers of this programme in 2022. GET Program subscriber will be supplied with electricity generated from solar and hydro powerplants that are in operation. They will as well receive a certificate that verify their RE source electricity supply through the Malaysia Renewable Energy Certificates or mREC® which is registered with an international certification body.
Following the increase in Renewable Energy (RE) generation capacity as well as encouraging demand from consumers, the GET quota offered for year 2023 is higher than the previous 4,500GWh in 2022. According to the Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, “NRECC is fully committed in offering green electricity supply from RE sources to users, especially commercial companies and industry participants that would like to reduce their carbon footprint in an effort toensure environmental sustainability”.
“The GET programme provides an option for businesses, investors and organisations operating in Malaysia to fulfil their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitment through the utilisation of electricity from RE sources,” he added. The government also maintains GET programme’s main features including providing Imbalance Cost Pass Through (ICPT) charge exemption incentive for 6 months, beginning from January until June 2023.
At the same time, the review of incentive for the period of July until December 2023 is being undertaken by the Energy Commission to ensure clarity and fairness, as well as taking into account the security, reliability and sustainability of the electricity supply system holistically.Consumers that would like to subscribe or renew the GET programme can do so by applying through TNB’s website or visit the nearest Kedai Tenaga TNB from today.
