KUALA LUMPUR, February 18 – A total of 57 candidates have registered to contest at the central level for the 2023-2026 UMNO Election as of February 15. The Chairman of the UMNO Selection Committee, Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad informed that the candidates who have been registered are competing for 12 of the 19 positions in the Supreme Working Council (MKT), Women’s, Youth and Puteri UMNO Movement.
A total of 18 candidates have registered to run for four positions in MKT, namely permanent chairman, permanent deputy chairman and 25 other positions. For the Women’s Movement, 14 candidates have already registered, while Youth has 19 candidates and Puteri, six candidates, making a total of 39 candidates who have been registered for the wing level,” he said through a video recording on Thursday.
Shahrir said, at the Women’s level, there is one candidate for the position of permanent deputy chairman, one candidate for the vice chairman and 12 candidates to fill the 20 exco positions of the Women’s Movement. He added that the Youth Movement involved one candidate for permanent chairman, one candidate for leader and 17 candidates to fill 20 positions at the Youth exco level.
Next, for the Puteri wing, one candidate for permanent deputy chairman, three candidates for the position of Puteri leader and two candidates to fill 20 positions at the Puteri exco level, he explained. He said that there is still no individual who has sent an application to run for the presidency at the MKT level. This may be because (those) who want to compete are checking and surveying the reception for the positions they want to compete for.
“For important positions such as the head of Women, there are no candidates yet, but I expect there will be a competition when all interested candidates present themselves. The registration process takes two weeks, we give enough time for competition registration for certain positions. We expect this process to run until February 26 and will become more lively and more people will register,” he explained.
