KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 – Yesterday Cabinet meeting focused on the Attorney General’s decision to withdraw the appeal in Jill Ireland’s case regarding the publication of materials containing the word ‘Allah’. The Cabinet acknowledged that the decision only pertained to administrative matters and did not alter the ruling of the Federal Court in 2014. The Council of Ministers reiterated the government’s respect for, endorsement of, and adherence to the enactments of the states and the decree of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong issued on 7 February 2023.

The decree emphasized the importance of maintaining the existing policy on the use of the word ‘Allah’. The government remains committed to upholding the Federal Constitution, particularly Article 3, which recognizes Islam as the Federal religion while ensuring the peaceful and harmonious practice of other religions. To address this issue comprehensively and holistically, the Cabinet of Ministers has obtained the consent of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to propose measures that will enhance the enforcement of the policy on the use of the word ‘Allah’ to the Council of Rulers.

These measures aim to strengthen unity and harmony among the various races and religions in Malaysia. The Cabinet’s decision reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to promoting religious understanding, respect, and tolerance in the country. The proposed measures will be presented to the Council of Rulers in due course, with the objective of maintaining peace and harmony while upholding the constitutional rights of all Malaysians. The government believes that through dialogue and cooperation, Malaysia can continue to foster a society where diverse religious beliefs are respected and celebrated.
