MELAKA, May 19 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized that increasing teachers’ allowances should be a priority for the government in safeguarding the welfare of educators. However, he noted that the timing of the allowance increase will depend on the country’s future income and revenue growth. Anwar highlighted the need for sufficient additional funds to provide educators with reasonable wages and salaries. “One of my priorities is to increase teachers’ and public service allowances.

But we shouldn’t expect it immediately; we need to give it more time and opportunities,” he stated. The Prime Minister made these remarks while officiating the 52nd National Teacher’s Day Celebration in 2023, held at the Melaka International Trade Center (MITC) in Ayer Keroh. The event was attended by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. The theme of the 52nd National Teacher’s Day celebration was ‘Human Teachers as Catalysts of a Civilized Generation.

The event also presented two prestigious awards: the 2023 National Education Leadership Award and the 2023 National Teacher Leader Award. While recognizing the importance of increasing teachers’ allowances, Anwar acknowledged the necessity of assessing the country’s income and revenue growth before implementing any changes. By taking a comprehensive approach, the government aims to ensure that teachers’ welfare is safeguarded and that they are adequately compensated for their crucial role in shaping future generations.

As the nation celebrates its teachers, the government remains committed to addressing the needs and concerns of educators, including enhancing their allowances, as part of its ongoing efforts to uplift the education sector.
