KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 – In a surprising turn of events, several leaders from the Unity Government were spotted attending the 2023 UMNO General Conference (PAU) held at Dewan Merdeka, World Trade Center (WTC) in Kuala Lumpur. Of particular interest was the presence of Pakatan Harapan (PH) Chairman and President of the People’s Justice Party (PKR), Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who made a remarkable return to PAU after being expelled from the party back in 1998.
Anwar, looking stylish in a light blue Malay shirt, arrived at approximately 9 am and was warmly welcomed by UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, along with other high-ranking party officials. Notably, the event also saw the attendance of Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) President, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and DAP Secretary General, Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof was also present to witness the historic moment. It has been 25 years since Anwar last took the stage at PAU, where he previously served as Deputy President of UMNO before being ousted from the party. Following his dismissal from the position of Deputy Prime Minister, Anwar was subsequently imprisoned on what he claimed to be politically motivated charges aimed at derailing his career and influence.
