PUTRAJAYA, July 5 – The Election Commission (EC) announced that the voting day for the 15th general elections in six states will take place simultaneously on August 12. Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, Chairman of the EC, also revealed that the nomination of candidates will occur on July 29. Speaking at a press conference held at the EC headquarters in Putrajaya on Thursday, Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh stated, “Early voting is scheduled for August 8.”
The upcoming general elections will involve 36 seats in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) of Kedah, Kelantan (45), Terengganu (32), Penang (40), Selangor (56), and Negeri Sembilan (36). According to Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, the campaigning period will last for 14 days, starting after the declaration of candidates on July 29 until 11:59 pm on August 11. He also provided details about the application process for postal votes, explaining that the application window for both foreign and domestic postal votes, which opened on June 15, will close on July 26 for category 1A.
“The closing date for category 1B is this Saturday, while 1C is July 11. Category 1A comprises election officers, SPR members, officers, and media personnel. Malaysians who are abroad fall under category 1B, and category 1C includes agencies and organizations,” Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh elaborated. In terms of election management, the EC has appointed 245 election management officers who will be assisted by 740 assistants.
Additionally, to monitor campaign activities, the EC has established 252 campaign enforcement teams consisting of police, local authorities, and representatives from competing candidates. Abdul Ghani emphasized that potential candidates are urged to complete and review the necessary forms at the managing officer’s office or the state election office before the nomination day. He encouraged them to make deposit payments in advance to ensure a smooth nomination process.
“The completed and checked candidate nomination papers must be submitted by the candidate, incumbent, or proposer on the nomination day,” Abdul Ghani explained. He also mentioned that any party wishing to become an observer can submit an application to the Election Commission through the email address [email protected].
