GEORGE TOWN, July 8 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the importance of leaders having adequate knowledge before making statements on various issues. He specifically referred to the recent claim that Penang belongs to Kedah and highlighted the significance of respecting historical facts. Anwar pointed out that there is an extensive historical record detailing the changes that occurred during the formation of the Federation of Malaya, and this information should be acknowledged.
He cautioned against individuals relying on limited knowledge and half-truths to portray themselves as experts on a subject. “If we read history books, we would not engage in discussions suggesting that Kedah is taking over Penang. We need to understand that a little knowledge can mislead someone into thinking they are an expert. Half-truths can be absolute lies,” stated Anwar during the Anwar Meeting Program at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need for leaders to be well-informed and well-read before making statements or addressing any issue. He encouraged individuals to study history books, highlighting examples such as the history of Siam, Brunei’s relationship with Sarawak, the influence of Sulu in Sabah, and the ancient Kingdom of Sriwijaya. Anwar stressed that aspiring leaders face even greater challenges and must refrain from engaging in petty politics.
Instead, they should rely on knowledge to guide their actions and prioritize the well-being of the people. The comments from Anwar come in response to the statement made by Kedah Chief Minister Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor on May 29, asserting that Kedah and Penang do not share a border, as Penang remains part of Kedah’s territory. He claimed that Kedah only shares borders with Perak and Perlis.
