KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 – Tesla Sdn. Bhd., the renowned American electric automotive manufacturer, has unveiled its strategic expansion into the Malaysian market, in response to the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Global Leaders initiative by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). Key highlights of Tesla’s operation in Malaysia include the introduction of its cutting-edge electric vehicles, Model 3 and Model Y, to cater to the diverse needs of Malaysian consumers.
Additionally, Tesla will invest significantly in a widespread network of fast-charging and regular-charging stations, establishing its head office and service center in Cyberjaya, and setting up experience centers in key metropolitan areas. The Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, YB Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Aziz, commended Tesla’s choice to invest in Malaysia, emphasizing the alignment of Tesla’s sustainable mobility commitment with the nation’s vision for a greener future.
MITI aims to attract companies like Tesla to create greener economic opportunities and higher-paying jobs for Malaysians, while bolstering the country’s pro-business and pro-investment credentials. Tesla’s investment comes as the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) has approved multiple projects amounting to RM26.2 billion in the EV sector and related ecosystems since 2018. The growth of electric mobility contributes to Malaysia’s sustainable development, job creation, and a greener future, all in line with the nation’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
Ms. Isabel Fan, Tesla’s Regional Director, expressed excitement about driving Malaysia towards a zero-emission and greener future. Tesla’s expansion is set to revolutionize the automotive market in Malaysia and aid the nation in achieving its environmental goals under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). With Tesla’s entry, Malaysia aims to achieve at least 15% of xEVs out of the total industry volume (TIV) by 2030 and 38% of xEV by 2040.
As part of the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB) 2021-2030 and National Energy Policy (NEP) 2022-2040. By 2025, the country will have 10,000 units of Charging Facilities, comprising 9,000 alternating current (AC) units and 1,000 direct currents (DC) units. Tesla’s expansion marks a significant milestone for Malaysia’s sustainable mobility and economic growth, contributing to the nation’s journey towards a greener and more inclusive future.
