KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 – The Malaysian 5G Implementation Task Force, jointly led by YBhg. Datuk Chief Secretary to the Treasury and YBhg. Datuk Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Digital, has successfully reached an agreement on equity participation in Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and a 5G access agreement with DNB. CelcomDigi, Maxis, Telekom Malaysia, U-Mobile, and YTL Communications will finalize the shareholding process in DNB to support the development of the 5G network.
DNB aims to achieve 80% coverage in populated areas by the end of 2023 before transitioning to a dual-network model in January 2024. The service providers will ensure proper governance in carrying out this process. As of 30th June 2023, DNB has developed 64.7% coverage of the 5G network in populated areas, putting it on track to achieve its set targets. As previously committed, Maxis has begun the process of signing the 5G access agreement with DNB after resolving related issues on 11th July 2023.
Maxis customers will soon enjoy 5G services pending shareholder approval at the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) next month. On the other hand, CelcomDigi, Telekom Malaysia, U-Mobile, and YTL Communications have already been offering 5G services since signing the access agreement with DNB last year. With the cooperation of all parties, the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) ensures that the government’s aspirations are realized through an inclusive, transparent, and clear process, ensuring the best quality of services for the people of Malaysia.
