KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 – PETRONAS, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), and Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) have received four Approvals in Principle (AiPs) for their jointly developed liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers and LCO2 floating storage and offloading unit (FSO). The AiPs, granted by classification societies Det Norsk Veritas AS (DNV) and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), signify that the design of the LCO2 carriers and FSO meets the technical requirements and safety standards.

The AiPs mark an important milestone for PETRONAS and its partners in their commitment to providing decarbonization solutions and establishing Malaysia as a leading Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) hub in the region. LCO2 carriers play a crucial role in the CCS value chain, enabling the transportation of CO2. The approvals reinforce PETRONAS’ dedication to sustainable practices and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. MOL expressed its satisfaction with the achievement, emphasizing the significance of large-scale development in the CCS value chain for the Asia Pacific and Oceania region.

The company aims to accelerate efforts to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by actively participating in the CO2 transport business. SDARI, in joining this innovative project with PETRONAS and MOL, highlighted the importance of the concepts in LCO2 transportation and operation, which will contribute to the advancement of CCS development in the maritime industry. The AiPs granted by DNV include designs for a short-haul LCO2 carrier with a capacity of 14,000 m3 and a long-haul LCO2 carrier with a capacity of 87,000 m3.

The AiPs awarded by ABS are for an 87,000 m3 LCO2 carrier equipped with a Dynamic Positioning System and a 96,000 m3 LCO2 FSO for intermediate storage. These designs represent the largest capacity vessels with AiP in their respective categories, enabling more efficient and cost-effective LCO2 marine transportation. Collaboration with industry partners is a deliberate step for PETRONAS to accelerate the delivery of effective solutions with lower carbon footprints. The company remains committed to achieving its Net Zero Carbon Emissions target by 2050.

The attainment of these AiPs showcases the progress made by PETRONAS, MOL, and SDARI in developing sustainable solutions and contributing to the global effort to combat climate change.
