GEORGE TOWN, August 6 — Caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has appealed to the voters of Penang to reject political parties that resort to exploiting sensitive racial and religious issues during the election campaign. Chow, who is also the Penang Pakatan Harapan chairman, emphasized that such tactics could jeopardize the unity of the people in the state. While addressing reporters after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Penang Global Tourism and Trip.com Group, Chow expressed his concern over the usage of racial and religious issues to gain votes, particularly among the Malay community.

He urged political parties to focus on pertinent issues, such as the Unity Manifesto, Penang2030 Vision, and the promises made during the 2018 election, for constructive criticism and debate. Chow also called on all party machinery, including both Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional supporters, to work diligently to ensure the continuity of the unity government’s administration in the state. As the state election approaches, Chow is set to contest against H’ng Khoon Leng of Perikatan Nasional to defend the Padang Kota seat, a position he has held since 2008.

With the election day on August 12, the Penang chief minister’s call for a campaign focused on unity, progress, and constructive discourse echoes the need for responsible and inclusive politics in the state. As voters head to the polls, the choice to reject parties that fuel divisions can pave the way for a more united and prosperous Penang.
