GEORGE TOWN, September 9 – The Penang Hill Funicular Service is scheduled to undergo its first bi-annual maintenance for the year 2024, with a temporary shutdown planned from January 2 to January 11, 2024. Normal operations are expected to resume on January 12, 2024. The Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) conducts two major scheduled maintenance sessions each year, with expert supervision from engineers representing the funicular manufacturer, Garaventa AG from Switzerland. PHC performs daily, weekly, and monthly assessments, alongside routine inspections conducted after operational hours. These measures are implemented to ensure the funicular system remains in optimal working condition and complies with rigorous safety standards. During the temporary shutdown period, visitors have alternative options to reach the summit area of Penang Hill. They can utilize the jeep service offered by the Penang Hill Jeep Service Association (contactable at 012-4541255), located at the Rifle Club Car Park (Penang Botanic Gardens).
Alternatively, visitors may choose to follow the existing hiking routes leading to the hill’s summit.
