KUALA LUMPUR, September 20 – Maxis’ flagship community programme, eKelas, continues to drive digital education with the aim of providing a comprehensive digital learning experience through vibrant activities and campaigns. eKelas, which is designed to enhance the academic performance of students in rural communities, serves as an after-school digital learning initiative for students ranging from Year 4 to Form 5. This programme offers an engaging approach to learning and provides access to high-quality educational content that aligns with the Malaysian School Syllabus.
A prominent component of eKelas is the annual STEM challenge known as Misi Jelajah Digital (MJD), which focuses on improving students’ knowledge and skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects. Since its inception in 2021, MJD has been instrumental in equipping eKelas students with essential digital skills. To date, more than 2,000 students nationwide have participated in this competition. Now in its third year, the 2023 MJD challenge was recently launched at SJK Chung Hua No. 4 in Kuching, Sarawak, followed by a series of workshops spanning two days.
Over 580 enthusiastic students from 54 schools in Kuching actively participated in these workshops. During the workshops, they learned about various aspects including storyboarding, idea conceptualization, and proposal presentation. Goh Seow Eng, Maxis Chief Executive Officer, expressed the company’s commitment to helping students gain easy access to quality after-school education through the eKelas portal and app. He emphasized the importance of STEM education and how the MJD competition contributes to students’ foundation for the future.
The 2023 competition offers students the opportunity to enhance their skills in programming, coding, and design thinking. Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), MJD challenges students to develop real-life solutions and create animation videos or design games related to the SDGs. All participants will receive co-curriculum marks or Pentaksiran Aktiviti Jasmani Sukan dan Kokurikulum (PAJSK) credits, in addition to the chance to win attractive prizes. MJD is open to all Malaysian students ranging from Year 4 to Form 5.
To encourage collaboration, communication, and teamwork, this year’s competition allows groups of 2-4 members. Participants can choose from the following categories and tasks:
- Upper Primary: Year 4 – 5: Create ONE digital animated VIDEO to educate peers about one of the SDG Goals.
- Lower Secondary: Form 1 – 3: Build a 2-level (minimum) GAME to educate peers about the SDG Goals.
- Upper Secondary: Form 4 – 5: Build a 3-level (minimum) GAME to educate peers about the SDG Goals.
Throughout the competition period, free online workshops on animation and game design will be available. eKelas students can access learning content on coding, storytelling, and other related digital skills via the eKelas portal. eKelas focuses on subjects including Science, Mathematics, English, Bahasa Melayu, and History. It provides experiential learning through live tutorials, group learning, competitions, and digital content delivered via the eKelas portal and app.
In addition to STEM, students also have the opportunity to participate in the HIP Storyfest annual competition.
