JAKARTA, September 27 – The Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA) and the Video Streaming Association of Indonesia (AVISI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Jakarta, marking a significant step towards combating online piracy in Indonesia. The MOU also aims to raise awareness about these efforts. This collaboration between AVIA and AVISI represents a strong commitment to fighting online piracy in Indonesia while safeguarding the country’s creative and media industries.

Officials from Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) were present at the MOU signing ceremony, which took place during the Coalition Against Piracy’s (CAP’s) State of Piracy Summit. This summit, organized by AVIA, provided a platform for discussions involving representatives from Kominfo and AVISI. The signing of the MOU comes at a time when CAP’s recent annual consumer surveys have revealed that 54% of consumers in Indonesia accessed pirate services in 2023, making it the fourth-highest incidence of piracy in the region.

However, there is growing awareness of the negative consequences of piracy, with 94% of Indonesian consumers believing that online piracy has harmful effects, the highest percentage in the region. The most significant perceived negative impact is damage to the creative industry. Ajeng Parameswari, General Secretary of AVISI, highlighted the core mission of AVISI, saying, AVISI was established to create a thriving ecosystem for the digital-creative industry, one that aligns seamlessly with the video streaming business model.

However, the primary challenge we face today is the widespread threat of piracy. Ajeng emphasized the need for a collective and amplified response to piracy, stating, “AVISI is delighted to announce a pivotal partnership with AVIA, aiming to expand the battle against piracy beyond borders and safeguard content not only within Indonesia but also on an international scale. The eradication of piracy is a shared responsibility, one that must serve as a resounding deterrent to those who perpetrate it. Government support is crucial in this endeavor. The partnership between AVISI and AVIA represents a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against piracy.

It underscores AVISI’s unwavering commitment to a piracy-free digital-creative industry. Together, they pledge to bolster defenses, promote legal access to content, and champion the rights of content creators, ensuring that creativity thrives and piracy diminishes. Louis Boswell, CEO of AVIA, expressed his delight at joining forces with AVISI to combat online video piracy. He noted, “Piracy is the single biggest problem the video industry faces, and addressing it requires a multifaceted approach. With the establishment of AVISI, I believe we will have greater success and engagement with the industry in Indonesia to work towards solutions.

We must also acknowledge the invaluable support of the government, particularly the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo), which has been an excellent partner in addressing and mitigating piracy-related issues. With our new partnership with AVISI and the support of Kominfo, I am more optimistic than ever that momentum is growing to combat piracy in Indonesia effectively.”
