KUALA LUMPUR, October 9 – On September 5, 2023, the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) and the Malaysian National Shippers’ Council (MNSC) jointly organized the Global Shippers’ Roundtable at the One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya. This event, themed “Navigating the Waves of Unpredictability: Building Shippers’ Resilience for the Next Normal,” served as a crucial platform for discussing key challenges and strategies to enhance productivity and competitiveness in the shipping sector.
Deputy Director General of MPC, Zahid Ismail, expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration and highlighted the event’s significance. He noted the honor of having YB Tuan Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport, as a keynote speaker. The roundtable brought together industry leaders to deliberate on sustainable strategies and policies for the efficient movement of goods across borders. Participants discussed economic concerns, industry challenges, and adaptation to the evolving global economic and business landscape in the post-pandemic era. Additionally, it provided valuable networking opportunities.
Guest speakers shared best practices for improving shippers’ overall efficiency and competitiveness in international trade. Tan Sri Dato’ Soh Thian Lai, President of the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), delivered a special address, and Prof. Dr. Ong Kian Ming, Program Director at Taylor’s University, shared insights on “Future-Proofing Malaysia’s Trade.” The event featured three panel sessions, addressing topics such as post-pandemic challenges mitigation and the utilization of multimodal logistics for cross-border regional trade.
Industry and thought leaders, including representatives from the Hong Kong Shippers’ Council, American Association of Exporters and Importers (AAEI), Logistics Productivity Nexus (LPN), and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, shared their experiences and expertise. During the event, MPC launched the “Export and Import Procedures in Malaysia Guidebook,” serving as a valuable reference for the logistics industry. The Global Shippers’ Roundtable aligns with Malaysia’s Ekonomi MADANI aspirations to boost the nation’s productivity, particularly in the logistics sector.
This initiative aims to enhance competitiveness, foster sustainable economic development, and improve the quality of life for citizens. Despite domestic and global economic challenges, the logistics sector holds immense potential to generate highly productive economic activities benefiting various stakeholders and the nation as a whole.
