KUALA LUMPUR, October 14 – In the Budget 2024 announcement, the Malaysian government underlines its commitment to advancing digital connectivity and cybersecurity, providing key updates on the progress achieved in these domains as of September 2023. As of September 2023, Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has successfully developed a 5G network with coverage in areas inhabited by 70.2 percent of the population. Keeping true to its promise, the 5G network is set to reach approximately 80 percent population coverage by the end of this year.
This achievement means that citizens can now enjoy 5G services offered by all telecommunications companies at a remarkably high quality level. To boost 5G adoption further, concerted efforts will be intensified through the collaboration of telecommunications companies, ensuring that more users and businesses can reap the benefits of this advanced technology. In tandem with the expansion of 5G, cybersecurity becomes a paramount concern. To address this, CyberSecurity is poised to develop a Cybersecurity Testing Framework for 5G and Local Expertise in 5G Technology.
This initiative aims to enhance preparedness against cyber threats and attacks in the 5G era. An allocation of RM60 million has been earmarked for these cybersecurity endeavors, signifying the government’s commitment to bolstering the nation’s cybersecurity infrastructure. These efforts underline the government’s determination to ensure that Malaysia continues to make significant strides in digital connectivity and cybersecurity, aligning with the broader national strategy for technological advancement and security.
The investment in 5G infrastructure and cybersecurity readiness is expected to drive digital transformation and safeguard the nation’s digital assets.
