GEORGE TOWN, October 16 – Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow addressed the issue of some detractors wanting his removal and called upon them to respect the Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) decision to appoint him as the Chief Minister. Speaking at an event in George Town, he acknowledged the existence of those “in and outside DAP” who were seeking to “defeat him” but emphasized the need for unity and support under his leadership, as reported by Sin Chew Daily.
However, the chief minister’s statements, which included a remark about not yet passing the test to remain in his role, raised questions. Today, Chow clarified these comments, stating that they were related to recent issues, particularly a land sale by the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) to a private company. He pointed out that as the chief minister, he is ultimately responsible for all issues, including this one. Chow underscored that the decision to retain him as Chief Minister was made by the party, and therefore, he expected full support from all members.
He stressed that with this support, he could focus on implementing the goals outlined in the Penang 2030 Plan. Separately, DAP Chairman Lim Guan Eng indicated that any moves to “defeat Chow” should be communicated to the party leadership. The controversy surrounding Chow centers on a land sale in Batu Kawan by the PDC to a private company, which was allegedly sold for less than the market rate according to the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce. In response, Chow has been asked to reconsider the deal, and PDC is expected to meet soon to determine the next steps.
Chow’s call for unity and support in light of these developments highlights the internal challenges facing the DAP and the Penang state government. The situation is likely to be closely monitored in the coming days as the party and government address these issues.
