GEORGE TOWN, October 18 – Icon Sunsuria Sdn. Bhd. (“Icon Sunsuria”) has unveiled a groundbreaking partnership with Island Hospital to introduce their first-ever cancer center in Malaysia, scheduled to open its doors in Penang in early 2024. This strategic collaboration merges Icon Sunsuria’s regional expertise in oncology with Island Hospital’s esteemed position as one of Malaysia’s largest private medical facilities and a renowned hub for medical tourism. The outcome is a world-class cancer care destination accessible to patients.
The signing ceremony, which marked this significant milestone, featured Ms. Serena Wee, Chief Executive Officer of Icon ASEAN and Hong Kong, representing Icon Sunsuria, and Mr. Mark Wee, Chief Executive Officer of Island Hospital. Additionally, Tan Sri Datuk Ter Leong Yap, Founder and Executive Chairman of Sunsuria Berhad, and Ms. Lim Kooi Ling, Chief of Staff of Island Hospital, were present to witness the occasion. This partnership gave birth to Icon Sunsuria, a collaborative endeavor dedicated to delivering comprehensive and evidence-based cancer care to patients in the region. Serena Wee, CEO of Icon ASEAN and Hong Kong, expressed Icon Sunsuria’s mission to make advanced cancer care accessible through a patient-centered approach. She emphasized the importance of this partnership with Island Hospital, uniting their extensive oncology expertise with a renowned healthcare institution to bridge gaps in cancer care access and alleviate healthcare burdens.
Mark Wee, CEO of Island Hospital, reiterated their commitment to enhancing oncology as a pillar of medical excellence and providing top-tier treatments to patients from the region. He also highlighted the advancement of the public-private partnership concept envisioned by the Ministry of Health in improving cancer care under a person-centered approach. Island Hospital, with its international accreditation and 600-bed capacity, is recognized as a premier healthcare provider in Malaysia. It has been shortlisted by the Ministry of Health for the Flagship Medical Tourism Hospital Programme and continues to play a pivotal role in Malaysia’s healthcare sector by welcoming health travelers from around the globe.

The strategic location and strong reputation of Penang as a medical treatment destination made it the ideal choice for Icon Sunsuria’s first cancer center. The collaboration with Island Hospital represents a significant step toward providing high-quality cancer care not only to the northern Malaysian population but also to the broader Southeast Asian region. The Icon Sunsuria and Island Hospital partnership marks a momentous leap in advancing healthcare accessibility, demonstrating a shared vision to bring world-class cancer care closer to home for people across Malaysia and beyond. The Cancer Center is set to open its doors in January 2024, a major milestone in their journey to make quality healthcare more accessible.
